Part dos of Moro: the dinner party involved paella de cerdo con chorizo y espinaca (rice with pork, chorizo and spinach). The book’s authors, Sam & Sam Clark, describe this recipe as “very Spanish in taste… complex and comforting.” It includes its fair share of special ingredients (sigh), including chorizo, calasparra (paella) rice, sweet smoked Spanish paprika, and noras peppers.
Una semana de Espana
Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008This week at Cooking the Books, we take a look at Moro: The Cookbook by Sam and Sam Clark. Moro means moor in Spanish, and it is also the name of the Clarks’ popular Spanish-North African restaurant in Islington.
The cookbook, which I purchased last June, is filled with intriguing recipes for Spanish/North African/Eastern Mediterranean food, […]
Asian-fusion salmon
Wednesday, January 16th, 2008I like fish and would like to cook and eat more of it. But I’m often stopped by my own pickiness — I can’t stand fishy fish, and must have it fresh, fresh, Fresh! Enter the Whole Foods fish counter, where I picked up a lovely piece of line-caught king salmon (and paid a whopping […]
Peanut butter me up
Monday, January 14th, 2008
Peanut butter and chocolate are a classic combination, but one not often found in cake. So, I was greatly intrigued by the Barefoot Contessa at Home’s chocolate cupcakes and peanut butter icing. I made them yesterday for a friend’s party, and they were devoured to the last crumb. People actually sought me out to compliment the cupcakes!
Cooking scales of justice?

Deceptive, sneaky; tomato, to-mah-to? According to an AP article, things are coming to a head between Jessica Seinfeld (she of Deceptively Delicious) and Missy Chase Lapine (she of The Sneaky Chef), with a law suit. Lapine claims that Jessica Seinfeld plagiarized her ideas, and that Seinfeld’s husband, Jerry, slandered her on the “Late Show with David […]
Can’t stop cooking with the Contessa
Monday, January 7th, 2008I thought I could stop after only two recipes but, as it turns out, now that I’ve started cooking from Barefoot Contessa at Home: Everyday recipes you’ll make over and over again I can’t quit. Garten’s recipes are just so appealing (the beautiful photos don’t hurt either), not to mention easy. I shook off my Secret […]
(Too) Sweet treats
Monday, December 31st, 2007Nothing says festive quite like gingerbread, so I was happy to whip up the Barefoot Contessa at Home’s ultimate ginger cookie on Christmas day. Given Ina’s deep love of saturated fat, I was surprised to find that this recipe called for zero butter, but vegetable oil and only one egg.
Tasters loved the texture of these cookies — chewy on […]
Barefoot ole!
Thursday, December 20th, 2007Perhaps I should be eating last week’s dismissive words about Barefoot Contessa at Home by Ina Garten. I made the book’s recipe for Mexican chicken soup last night and it reminded me all over again why I love the Barefoot Contessa.
Ooh-la-lentils
Tuesday, December 18th, 2007
Actually, there is nothing ooh-la-la about the lentil soup I made last night, but I couldn’t resist the pun. I admit, I chose the recipe from Recipes from Provence because it was labelled “easy” – simply combine lentils, water, chopped onion, garlic, a bay leaf and cloves, cook until soft and then puree. Yes, it was […]
Progress: 0
Monday, December 17th, 2007After my impassioned vow to use those three virgin cookbooks, guess how many recipes I made this weekend? None.
But I did have a great time up in New York. Highlights included panino, white bean soup, and salad at ‘ino (I’m addicted to their roasted garlic salad dressing), seeing Hannah and Her Sisters at Film Forum, […]
