Winter blooms
By Ann | February 7, 2012
We’ve been experiencing glacial temperatures the past few days, which is very cozy as long as you’re inside, next to the radiator, covered in blankets and wearing two sweaters. But there are some benefits, according to this article from Le Parisien — among other things, the cold ensures that ornamental bulbs like tulips, crocuses, and hyacinths will flower beautifully come spring (if it ever gets here).
As for me, I’m hunkered down with a blanket on my lap, and my manuscript to keep me company. We’ve also been cooking lots of comfort food, including bolognese and split pea soup.
What are your favorite cold weather recipes, mes amis?

That’s what my mom has always said about bulbs. One of my favorite things is the fragrance of early spring bulb flowers–the hyacinth in your picture are gorgeous! Stay warm.

All variations of soup and heavier fare – pasta, risotto, meatballs.. all the foods we tend to shun during the warmer months. Like you, I’m shivering next to the radiator – stay warm!

We have been thinking about you and wondering how you are faring in the bitter cold.
A nice hearty bean soup works great to warm me up. Whole Foods has a new selection of amazingly beautiful raw beans (almost pretty enough to photo or display), which make a delicious soup. I love to add a drop of Sriracha hot sauce to soup for taste and warmth.

When it’s cold outside, there’s nothing like chicken soup (that’s really more like stew, the way I make it) or beef stew over mashed potatoes – yumm!
If you can get away from both the manuscript and the heater, I think there’s an author panel on the 15th at the American Library that might interest you.

A big bubbling pot of red, spicy-hot chili and beans.

Just had a bowl of homemade cassoulet and a glass of Bordeaux. It’s supposed to be cold tonight (in the 20′s) so I’m piled up in bed, under the duvet, with a kitty by my side!

Pumpkin soup, big pot of chili, and any variety of curries. Bitterly cold in Vienna now.

I remember many a frigid Parisian days (and nights), swaddled in a pashmina, feet propped on the radiator, plucking away on the keyboard… courage, Ann!
As for yummy cold weather treats: tartines et chocolat chaud!

Any variation of hearty Italian sauce atop a steaming portion of pasta suits me fine. As well as daub from Provence! Oh, and maybe a dram of scotch before the meal just to help circulation …
