Free macarons!
By Ann | March 18, 2010

Il arrive, il arrive! I speak of March 20, or le jour du macaron, the day when selected pâtissiers offer free macarons in celebration of spring. In return, recipients are asked to give a small donation in support of research to treat maladies orphelines, or rare diseases.
Along with celebrated Parisian pastry prince Pierre Hermé — who started le jour du macaron five years ago — pastry shops in seven countries (including the United States!) will be offering free cookies this year. If you live in France, the U.S., Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, or Japan, click here to find the participating pâtisserie closest to you!
This year Macaron Day falls on a Saturday, which will no doubt attract an especially large and avoid crowd of sugar seekers. So, arrive early to ensure that you receive your flavor of choice.
For my report on last year’s jour du macaron (including a photo of the queue — an early market indicator? — and menu of Pierre Hermé’s offerings) click here.

It would be a shame to disturb the beautiful spectrum of macarons in the picture. But not that big of a shame — bon appetit, and happy spring!

The only macarons we get around here are frozen ones from TJ’s with none of the variety I see in your gorgeous photo … yum!

I saw the line in front of Pierre Hermé by WHS yesterday . . . did not join it myself, alas.
Have you seen THIS darling creation from Cakespy? Well worth a look.

How fitting! It was writing about Pierre Hermé in Tokyo that led me to your site last summer. And now, after a very tiring and overworked winter, it is macarons again as I make my way through my stuffed google reader.
It’s taken weeks to go through, and I’ve been saving my favorite sites for last, but I am finally in the homestretch. It’s been lovely to catch up here today and well worth the wait!

Oh how my heart sings whenever I see or think of these wonderful cookies. I was just in Seattle and was able to eat a few from a french shop but the filling was just not the same. ahhhhhhhhh

I observed Macaron Day in NYC! My mom and I went to a place on the upper west side, and were served two delicious (if miniscule) treats, chestnut and pistachio. Looking forward to more in Paris!

Chris — They are a light cookie. Perfect for spring.
Dad — Trader Joe’s has chocolate and vanilla, right? Those are two of my favorite flavors. I think I’m a macaron traditionalist.
Kim — That link is SO CUTE. Or should I say sweet? Thank you for sharing!
Stephanie — Welcome back! Thank you for all your lovely comments. Sounds like you’ve had a busy few months — sounds like you need a macaron treat.
Ann — And the filling is key, n’est-ce pas?
Amanda T — Soon! Soon!
