The best laid plans of mice and first-time authors

Oh, mes amis, where do I even start? Well, the good news is that we had a wonderful party on Tuesday at the beautiful Museum of Chinese in America, sponsored by the delicious Luckyrice Asian food festival. I loved seeing old and new friends from the New York book and magazine world and was incredibly touched that so many people braved the impending snowstorm to celebrate Kitchen Chinese.

We drank Prosecco, ate peanut noodles, and I was honored and excited to sign copies of my book for the first time!
I never thought I’d cook for my own book party, but I’m happy to report that my peanut noodle salad was a huge hit! Many, many thanks to my friends Amanda and Lucia, who let me use their kitchens, Dylan and Kaori for use of their fridge, and my dad, who tossed the noodles together at the last minute.

The trouble began yesterday morning, as we caught a train to Washington DC and the blizzard began…

The mid-Atlantic crept by in a white blur…

When our train finally pulled into the station, it was covered in ice — and my speaking event in Washington DC had been cancelled due to the weather.

At least there were martinis and my favorite bar snack, truffle-parmesan popcorn, at the West End Bistro to cheer me up last night. And, so here I am, stuck in Washington. Today’s flight to Miami was cancelled due to DC weather conditions and the airlines have informed me that there is no way I will make it to Florida today. So, to my disappointment, tonight’s speaking event in Miami has also been cancelled.
The tally so far:
Wonderful book parties: 1
Book events cancelled: 2
Flights cancelled: 2
Number of Powerpoint presentations prepared on Chinese regional cuisine: 1
Number of times I have given Powerpoint presentation: 0
Vodka martinis drunk last night: 1 1/2
Next stop: San Francisco on Friday — please keep your fingers crossed for me!

What a great party! And now, some time to explore the snowdrifts of the District of Columbia. We have our fingers crossed that Potbelly will be open today. Or Baja Fresh. Can’t wait to get to California!

I totally want to see that powerpoint presentation! Will you be showing it in Paris? Bummer about your flights and talks being cancelled - I hope the weather clears up for you soon!

Where are you in DC? I was downtown hoping to meet up with you yesterday but didn’t get confirmation that you had actually made it to DC. Would love to get together tonight if you’re game!
