RIP, Gourmet magazine
By Ann | October 5, 2009

I just heard the news. According to this New York Times report, after 68 years, Gourmet magazine will cease publication in November. I can scarcely type for shock. No more impractical-but-sumptuous menus. No more messily gorgeous food photography — the most beautiful in the business. No more eye-opening travel pieces.
Writing for Gourmet was always my dream, the glossy magazine at the pinnacle of my aspirations. Now, I’ll never have that chance, tant pis. What’s even sadder, is that the food world has lost a veritable grande dame, an authority of taste and things that taste good.
What’s next? The New Yorker?!

This is terrible. I can not believe they made this decision. McKinsey should be shot for the advice, and CN should be shot for following it.
Cookie, Modern Bride, fine. Gourmet?!!! Good grief. I’m appalled.

The plight of print media is depressing. I rely on online news here in Iraq, but nothing beats newsprint. Of course I’m biased (and could read regular papers if I spoke Arabic). But I guess people do not want to pay for news (or features) anymore. Let’s hope Kindle does not spell the end of real books.

It’s a sad day for publications in general, not to mention those devoted to food and those who cook it, grow it, write about it or just plain love to eat it….sigh.

’tis true, ’tis true ’tis pity,
And pity ’tis ’tis true

True, the menus were “impractical-but-sumptuous” but most recipes were actually very doable… I’m so sad…

Kim B. — Agree, bad advice from McKinsey. A friend was saying, someone should do a story, following up on companies that have followed McKinsey’s advice. I think that could be pretty fascinating.
Chris — I know, I can’t help but wonder — does this spell the end of magazines? Can blogs and webisites possibly take their place?
Alison — Yes, a sad day, indeed. But there is such a growing movement to cook, garden, shop and eat well, I can’t imagine it NOT being covered by the media… at least, I hope.
Dad — I agree, tis true!
Maria — At least there’s still Epicurious for all those back issue recipes…

Sad, but I agree about the impracticality. Did I read above that Cookie got the ax, too? I get that magazine! It was a gift. Wonder what will happen to my subscription. I might be secretly glad, given that they recently stuck Dr. Jenny McCarthy on the cover and wrote an irresponsible article singing her praises and giving her yet another platform to spout her freak science theories to other gullible parents. Did I just hijack your blog to vent? I guess I did.

Sherry,
Feel free to come by to vent any time! xoxo
