All about my book
By Ann | September 10, 2009

Bonjour, mes amis! I am so, so, SO squeakily excited to share with you news about my first novel, Kitchen Chinese: A Novel about Food, Family and Finding Yourself, which Avon/HarperCollins will publish in February!
I wrote the book while living in Beijing, and it’s based loosely on my experiences as a Chinese-American young woman in China. It’s a story about identity, about losing and finding yourself in another culture, and, above all, about the delicious, nourishing, intoxicating power of food.
Kitchen Chinese will be published in February, just in time to ring in the Chinese New Year of the tiger. In the meantime, visit Avon/HarperCollins’s catalog to learn more about the book, including a synopsis and blurbs. You can also pre-order the book on Amazon or from your nearby independent bookstore. And keep checking back here — I’ll be updating this blog with further news as it happens!
Finally, thanks, as always, for your support. As you know, I don’t really enjoy cooking for one — well, it turns out I don’t really love writing for one either. It’s so gratifying to share this all with you.

That’s great news! Congratulations! I didn’t know you were writing a novel, but now I can’t wait to read it!

Oh Ann….I am so very proud of you! How cool is that….I must follow those links right now. By the way…I am sorry I am so lousy at the ‘tag’ thing but you are so sweet to come on by. I did attempt a week colour blue post…grin…here tis the link. I put it on my non-cooking blog…here. Oh and hey…I plugged the book…shamelessly of course!

As a CTB devotee who has read KITCHEN CHINESE, I must tell you all that the book is a delight. It swings right along, with wit and insight into modern China — and modern families. Just try not to read it while you’re hungry. The food descriptions will send you straight to the fridge, or to your nearest Chinese joint. Our Ann turns out to be every bit as good an author as she is a chef. Which shouldn’t surprise me, and it didn’t.

How exciting to see the cover — it’s gorgeous, spare and lush at the same time.
What an exciting journey for you from conception to writing to publication. I can’t wait to read it.
Loved your ‘blues’ post — just made me sad that my little closet of an apartment is bereft of so many of my favorite ‘things.’ I know we’re not supposed to be concerned with material things, but I am a nester and would that I could nest properly! Of course I sound like a total whiner next to Chris, so I should be ashamed of myself, but that’s the truth!
Congratulations on a fantastic accomplishment.

Ann, I might have to host book club at my house in March so we can all read it. Maybe you could make a special trip out to Los Angeles so you could join us? It’s always so much fun when we have the author at our meetings. LOL! I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!

How exciting to be publishing a book. Big congrats from me! If you’re coming to L.A. for a book signing I’d love to come. Keep us posted.

Wow, thanks for all your super kind comments! You guys are really the best, vous savez?
Camille — It’s been such a long process sometimes I forget I’ve been writing a novel. But I’d be honored for you to read it.
Trish — I was so touched by your link — thank you! And I LOVED your blue post. You may not like tags, but you’re awfully good at them.
Chris — I even miss Chinese food in Paris… I can’t IMAGINE the cravings in Baghdad. Why hasn’t Din Tai Feng expanded in the manner of McDonald’s? Que le monde est injuste.
Kim B. — Thanks for your nice words about the cover. Coming from a bookseller, that’s high praise! And totally understand about being a nester. Pretty things are super important!
Alison — I would LOVE to visit your book club. Actually, I will be in LA for book stuff in mid-February. Maybe we can work something out!
Kathleen — It is exciting, but also nerve-wracking. My hair is turning gray! I will definitely keep you posted on LA book-signings. I would love to meet you!

Sweet Freak — Aw, thanks. I don’t know if that’s true, but I do know I find COOKIES pretty inspiring. Thanks for the great pix on your blog!
Phil — Thanks! I’m still wondering where that photo could have been taken… Summer Palace, maybe?

Ann, congratulations! I’ll be looking forward to this release indeed.
I stumbled across your wonderful site a couple months ago looking for info about Pierre Herme macarons and am so glad I did. I’ve been enjoying reading ever since and always look forward to more. Cheers!

Claire — Thanks so much. It looks like I am (tentatively) scheduled in San Francisco on Feb 16. I’ll post a schedule as soon as it’s all confirmed…
Niceties — Thanks for the kind words! I look forward to your blue post, but please don’t worry if you’re too busy to get around to it.
