Allez, les Bleus!

By Ann | September 7, 2009

It’s true that, in France, Les Bleus refers to the national soccer team — you know, le football. But there’s no reason not to steal their nickname for my own purposes, in this case a little blog playground game. Croque Camille tagged me last week, challenging me to find seven blue items in my home. I’ve had les Bleus on my mind ever since.

What’s blue chez moi? Well, there’s my collection of blue-and-white ceramics (photo top), including my oversized Moroccan bowl, square dishes from Beijing, and a 187-year-old plate that sank in 1822 on the Chinese trading junk, the Tek Sing, and was recovered over a century later.

Chotchkie, knick-knack, objet d’art – call it what you will, this porcelain egg adorns my mantel.

These blue water glasses have been with me since my first post-college pad in Boston in 1997. Seven apartments later…

Apparently I never throw anything away, because this painted bookshelf has also been with me since 1997. I painted it in my Alphabet City studio apartment, and was almost asphyxiated from the fumes.

I no longer live in New York, but I’ll always be a Mets fan.

I love this 1964 New Yorker cover. CK was working at the United Nations when we met; I gave him the framed back issue when we got engaged.

Finally, I take photos from the market all the time, but here’s a bird’s eye view from my balcony. Today they look like blue logs, but tomorrow these canopies will be unfurled to protect tender produce from the sun.

Et voila, seven items from my blue period. And now, I’m supposed to tag seven people to join the game. AlisonKathyKristinMallikaNicetiesTrishSweet Freak, and anyone else who wants to play — what’s blue in your world?

Nice! I especially love the Moroccan bowl and the story of the 187-year old plate. How did you end up with it?

Let’s go Mets! How beautiful the design is. Don’t you love the intertwined orange N and Y, the serifs like little moustaches adorning the letters?

Camille — The plate was a gift from a friend… It came in a box printed with the words “Treasure of the Tek Sing” or something like that… kind of silly, but then again it’s nice to have the backstory, which was also in the box. Thanks again for the fun tag!

Chris — I do admit I like the orange and blue motif. But the uniforms should have high socks.

Alison — Looking forward to seeing your blues!

I’m sorry I missed this post last week. My computer died and I am in L.A. for my 40th high school reunion this weekend, using my friends computer. Hopefully, I will be back up and running with a new computer soon. Love your blues. Have a great week!

Kathy — Oh, no! You have computer blues! So sorry to hear about your mechanical problems. Sending good techno-vibes your way!

Oh Ann, I would have loved to but I am running almost a week late with my blog post. Also, everything in my flat is monochrome and chrome. We don’t do colour, apart from the odd splash of fuschia…

Pas de problème, Mallika! Of course I understand. In any case, your flat sounds gorgeous, even despite (or because of) the lack of blue!

I love the blue plate from the sunken boat Tek Sing. Pile it high with bright red cherries, yellow bananas and dark blue blueberries!
