Provence, je t’aime

By Ann | August 9, 2009

Bonjour, mes amis! It is I, your errant blogging friend, returned from vacation: two whole weeks in the hot sun, craggy landscape, and rich terrain of Provence. Sigh. The best part? Spending time with my husband, CK, who was on leave from Baghdad.

What did we do?

We hiked. Fourteen kilometers between Bonnieux and Buoux. That was 17km with our, er, detour.

We shopped.

We read.

We swam.

We cooked: soupe au pistou and ratatouille.

We ate.

We explored Roman ruins.

It was a lovely holiday. Stay tuned for further posts on my Provence discoveries including amazing Italian take-away near Apt, the best omelette in the world in Buoux, farm-stand vegetable adventures and more!

I have been hoping you two had a great time in Provence and it looks like you had an awesome time. The soup looks amazing. I just ate lunch and it makes me hungry. The pictures are fabulous. Please give our hellos to Chris and safe travels back to Baghdad.

Beautiful photos and a capsule summary of a lovely two-week holiday. The fresh veggies, the pistou soup (my favorite with a dollop of fresh pesto loaded with garlic), the lavender, and the gorgeous vistas must have made a wonderful two weeks for you and Chris to share.

i want to hear about the place(s) where you stayed! provence was one place we’ve gone where we just could not figure out what places to stay most appealed to us.

    Bob,
Pistou IS pesto, without the nuts (i.e. basil, garlic, EVOO, no pine or other nuts).

    Cheers,

    C

Awww, thanks for the nice comments, guys!

Caroline — Next trip: Provence? The lavender was in bloom, just a faint tinge of purple. Beautiful!

Dad — Mmmm… soupe au pistou is one of my favorites, too. Especially with the fresh beans!

Heather — We actually rented a friend’s house, located in Bonnieux. A kitchen is a must-have for me — I would be sad to be surrounded by all that luscious local produce and not be able to cook.

Chuck — isn’t it funny how close “pistou” and “pesto” are — even etymologically? I’ll have to look it up in my Larousse. Except pistou doesn’t have nuts or parmesan cheese. But sometimes I grate parmesan cheese over my bowl of soupe au pistou. In fact, I bet the soup would be great with a rind of parmesan thrown in as it simmers. Hmmmm….

Provence was paradise — more warm and welcoming than ever. CTB also deserves a gold star for driving our little Smart Car all over Vaucluse. We made some great discoveries, which CTB will share, I’m sure, in upcoming posts. And how about our diet of heavy reading? :)

that heavy reading looked heavy! ah, renting in bonnieux had to be so lovely. we have many happy meal memories of le fournil and sancerre on their sweet patio.

am reliving our fab Provence vacay earlier this summer through your photos. So glad you two had a lovely holiday. Would love to go back someday with you two (and perhaps sans les enfants — not that we don’t love travelling with them, but it’s definitely a different kind of experience :)!!)
