French food news: Vacation edition

By Ann | July 17, 2009

Bonjour mes amis! Goodness, another Friday, another week over, another edition of French food news. So, what’s going on in the French food media this week? Not a whole lot. Most of Paris is on vacation, including Le Figaroscope. Those who are not on holiday, are soaking up beach vibes at the Martin Parr exhibit at the Jeu de Paume (photo above, courtesy of e.j. hooligan). Ah, la belle vie francaise!

But just because the French are slacking, doesn’t mean a lack of articles about France — at least in English. The New York Times continues its Franc-obsession with at least three new articles about the hexagon: the Frugal Traveler writes about dining in Lyon, T Style partakes of some marathon Paris eating (call me crazy but 40 different places in four days does not sound pleasurable), and there’s a piece on 36 hours in Aix en Provence.

Meanwhile, the LA Times takes a look at Vietnamese fresh herbs, discussing the different varieties and how to use them. Check out the article here.

Soon, college kids won’t even be able to complain about cafeteria food. According to this AP article, some universities are equipping dorms with kitchens, and providing raw ingredients and take-out boxes to encourage college students to prepare their own meals. And we’re guessing that doesn’t include Top Ramen.

Meanwhile, NYT restaurant critic Frank Bruni has an epic piece in the upcoming Sunday magazine about his history of eating, bulimia, and professional dining. It’s excerpted from his forthcoming book, Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-Time Eater, which is due out next month.

Finally, I visited the pizzeria Maria Luisa again (again!) and updated my original post with new photos. Check out the pretty pictures here

Ok, mes amis, all this talk of vacations is making me a little sleepy. It’s also reminding me that I’ll be taking a little blog-holiday starting next week. But I’ll be back soon enough, with a photographic report on what I ate and (hopefully) cooked while away. In the meantime, happy Friday and happy eating!

I wonder what’s up with the beachgoers in the photo? Were they regretting not having had a V8? Or did they lose their hotel room key in the sand?
