French food news: Secret Paris pâtisserie club
By Ann | July 10, 2009

Bonjour, mes amis! Welcome to another edition of French food news. Alors, what’s going on in the French food media this week? Well, in that grand French tradition, Le Figaro has been on strike — which I only discovered when my newspaper didn’t arrive for three days in a row — resulting in… no Le Figaroscope this week. Hélas (alas). Their website does try to compensate with a video feature of a meeting of the Club des Sucrés, a secret organization of young pastry chefs. Much like a macaron, there’s not a lot of substance here (also, the poor chef they interview is so nervous he’s sweating through his clothes), but it’s kind of amusing, not to mention amazing, to view such total commitment to dessert. Check out the video here.
In other news… You’ve probably heard about Grant Achatz, the Chicago chef who battled tongue cancer and survived, all the while cooking at his restaurant, Alinea. Now his story will be a book — perhaps the first “gastronomical-oncological coffee-table book,” according to the New York Times, who featured the proposal here.
A flurry of recent NYT articles about Paris has included this piece on modern bistros from Mark Bittman, and about twenty different articles from the Frugal Traveler on everything from free music to flea markets (check out the index here).
Hot on the heels of my post about Bachelorette “cooking,” the LA Times reviews Deborah Madison’s new book, What We Eat When We Eat Alone. Part recipe book, part social analysis into our private eating habits, the author, who has written multiple vegetarian cookbooks, finds that the sandwich is particularly celebrated among solo diners. Hmmmm…. Check out the review here.
Okay, mes amis, my computer is running out of battery, so I better run. But happy Friday and happy eating!

Little did we know that it wasn’t sweat at all, but a champagne and rose petal infused simple syrup.
