French food news: Al fresco dining in Paris, Sriracha mania, my window box garden

By Ann | May 23, 2009

I think everyone in Paris has summer fever. Le Figaroscope certainly does — they’ve devoted this week’s food news to al fresco dining — this coming hot on the heels of last week’s article enumerating the best spots for a pre-dinner cocktail (many of which featured outdoor terraces).

So, where do these garden restaurants hide? The Bois de Boulogne, Buttes Chamont, Quai Branly, Bois de Vincennes, Jardin des Plantes, Champs-Elysées, Tuileries, and St-Georges all have outdoor dining spots. Le Fig lists ten al fresco tables, but one of the most interesting was Café Branly in the 7th. Le Fig says: Created by the landscape designer, Gilles Clément, the gardens at the Musée Branly have almost 200 trees and 300 types of plants. The garden is also home to roughly a dozen, recently hatched wild ducklings, who romp in the pond…. The food is as simple as possible at this museum cafe, with comfortable basics rather than attempting ambitious dishes. Opt for a cheese tartine, a salad, or carpaccio.

Check out all ten garden spots, including addresses, here

Let’s see, what else? As a Sriracha fan, it would be remiss of me to not post about the NYT’s recent article on the popular hot sauce. Fascinating glimpse into its creation — who knew it wasn’t Vietnamese? The multi-lingual label certainly had me fooled! Check it out here.

And finally, perhaps you’ve been wondering: How does my garden grow? Here’s a photo (above) of my pretty window boxes, which I have been tending this spring. The geraniums have responded so happily to this week’s sunshine, opening up their bright blooms to the warmth.

The rosemary and lavender plants have suddenly sprouted rangy growth, and are looking, frankly, a little weedy. But the leaves are fragrant to the touch, with their sweet, clean scent. And I love the delicate purple flowers that have suddenly appeared this week, as much a sign that summer is almost here as Memorial Day is.

Happy (long) weekend, and happy eating!
