French food news: Best flan in Paris

By Ann | March 27, 2009

Never-ending renovation at St-Sulpice

Bonjour, mes amis, and welcome to another edition of French food news — what’s going on in the French food media this week?

Le indefatigable le Figaroscope searches for more of the “best” of Paris — this time a quest for the best flan, which in Paris-speak is a sort of heavy custard pie. Admittedly, this is not high on my list of treats and even le Fig calls it “Neither pastry, nor a dessert from a pâtissier, it’s a cake linked to our childhood memories.” Hm. Sounds a bit Proustian. To view the results, and see a picture of flan, click here.

Also of interest in Le Fig, François Simon reviews Bread and Roses, a bakery-restaurant in the 6th that I think is overpriced (he agrees) though I quite like their corn bread. Also, Catherine Deneuve reportedly buys her bread here, so I’m always hoping to see her. FS likes their scones and small pastries (the cheesecake) but finds everything else pretty “banal.” Read the review here.

Hm, what else? I’m still dreaming about this gorgeously spicy, comfort-foody Indian meal of dal, rice, and keema that I made from my blogger friend Mallika’s Quick Indian Cooking site. Full confession: I used ground chicken instead of beef for the keema. Sorry, Mallika! My healthy-innovative cooking personality made me do it!

The new Mets stadium may be unnecessary and overpriced, but at least they’ll have some good chow. Shakeshack burgers? Corn on the cob with cojita cheese? This wife of a Mets fan, has tears of gratitude in her eyes. Check out the NYT article here.

Finally, as a cookbook lover, I can’t WAIT to visit Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks in New York which along with vintage cookbooks, offers back issues of food magazines and recipe pamphlets, second-hand kitchenware and aprons. Check out the description from Tasting Table here. (Thanks to AP for forwarding.)

Happy eating and happy Friday!

Citi Field may be overpriced, but a replacement for Shea was long overdue (much as I loved Shea, in a weird way). I only hope the concessions stands a) still sell Kahn’s beef franks and b) do not switch from Gulden’s spicy brown mustard. Actually, check that: I don’t care what they serve as long as the Mets play well!

I love flan. My mother used to make it for me when I had a cold. Not sure why only then. Onion fondue soup was also on that menu.

Kathy, Yum, that sounds like a great meal, cold or not.
