Food Wednesday: “Budget” Paris dining
By Ann | February 26, 2009
So, despite our observation last week that many restaurants seem to be packed to the gills any hour of the day, any of day the week, this week’s Le Figaroscope insists that the economic crise is affecting the dining scene. (I wish they’d tell that to Pizza Positano, ranked number 3 on Le Fig’s “best pizza” list, where we have now attempted to eat four — or is it five? — times, to no avail. They are so continuously crowded, I’m beginning to think they’re sprinkling their pies with crack cocaine.)
Anyway, this week’s Le Fig is dedicated to “meal deals,” or les bons plans anticrise. And some of them sound pretty tempting, particularly the black truffle fire-sale going on at Alain Ducasse’s Aux Lyonnais, which ends March 14: A black truffle is weighed in front of you, and then grated on the dish of your choice (or you can even have it grated directly onto a saucer, for an unadulterated bite). You then pay for this truffle enhancement by weight, at 0.70€ per gram. Of course, you still have to pay for your meal, so not sure how the savings are really adding up… In fact, many restaurants on the list seem to be offering discounts only at lunch, which begs the question, is the plan anticrise simply another way to say lunch formule?
One featured place that is decidedly budget is Goutu (51 rue le Pelletier, 9ème, tel: 01 44 79 01 87), a lunch counter that’s offering sandwiches for only 1€. Among the six choices are: tortilla-salad-mustard and tarama-cream chese-lemon sauce. Picky eaters fear not: For 3€ you can create your own sandwich.
Check out other meal deals and read the rest of the article here.
Meanwhile, there is a new fusion craze sweeping Los Angeles: kimchi tacos. I have been drooling ever since I read this article about the Kogi Korean BBQ To Go taco truck. Has anyone tried it? One person quoted in the article described it as “crazy delicious,” and now I’m dying of curiosity!
UPDATED TO ADD: Whoops, my father/West Coast scout, known to regular readers as Bob, has reminded me that he sent me this earlier article on Kogi Korean BBQ To Go, which appeared in the Los Angeles Times a few weeks before the NYT’s article (clearly someone got scooped!).

I like the idea of Pizza Positano’s “pizza and coke” special! Seriously, Paris is a surprisingly good place to be if you have a strict dining budget. The Vietnamese food, particularly at Pho 14 and some places in Belleville, is cheap and delicious. I have had scrumptious and inexpensive kebab gyros (sandwichs grecs) at hole-in-the-wall places around town. And the couscous lunch special at Le Tourne Bouchon is a winner!
