Food Wednesday: Best new tables of 2008, Movie star Paris, etc.
By Ann | December 17, 2008
Bonjour mes amis and welcome to another edition of Food Wednesday! What’s going on in the world of French food media this week?
Le Figaroscope has yet another “Best of” article, this time naming the 20 best tables opened in 2008. I can’t quite tell, but it seems like the little write-ups are actually written in verse, which, quite frankly, is beyond my French. Here are a few highlights:
Best bistro: Jadis (208 rue de la Croix-Nivert, 15ème, tel: 01 45 57 73 20) Le Fig says: “…A bistrot without pretension… and the cuisine of Guillaume Delage, wise youth of the saucepan, who has no screen except for his talent.”
Best snob: Bar Ladurée (13 rue Lincoln 8ème, tel: 01 40 75 08 75) Le Fig says: De Ladurée, le salon de thé (*note: see how it rhymes?) we know the babbling, the cackling, the macarons, the hot chocolate, the elegance rising from the feet of Vuitton and the whole world raises the pinky between two mouthfuls of sweet-salty.” Oh hell, we’re butchering this. Best to click on the link below for the French version.
Best Ducasse: Jules Verne (Tour Eiffel, 7ème, tel: 01 45 55 61 44)
Best “What a palace!”: Le Cinq, Hôtel George V (31 avenue George-V, 8ème, tel: 01 49 52 71 54)
Best bobo (*note: “bobo” stands for bourgeois bohème, which is what they’re calling wealthy hipsters these days): Mama Shelter (109 rue de Bagnolet, 20ème, tel: 01 43 48 45 45)

Meanwhile, also in Le Fig — guess who lives in our neighborhood? Kristin Scott Thomas! That’s right, the award-winning actress, looking quite heavily airbrushed, dishes on her secret spots in the 6th. Where does she like to go?
Bon Marché for shoes and cooking utensils. Le Cerise sur le Chapeau for Panama hats (*note: we wondered who was shopping here!). Le Rostand for coffee: “Here, I give meetings and sip tea. I like this cafe a lot, it’s frequented by students and tourists who visit the Latin Quarter. I like the view of the Luxembourg gardens.” Barthélémy for cheese, and Pascal Mutel for flowers. Click here for the article, which features more hot spots and addresses.
Okay, on to Anglophone news. The New York Times has an article about a chocolate shop/vélib tour of Paris — except they think Christian Constant the restaurateur and Christian Constant the chocolatier are the same person. Tsk, tsk! Also in the NYT, Portugal faces a salt cod crisis as thousands of busy home cooks chuck the labor-intensive soaking/draining/soaking process and turn to — gasp — frozen baccalao!
Meanwhile, in the Los Angeles Times, it’s latkes gone wild: olives! beets! carrots! jerusalem artichokes! If you can grate it, it has latke potential.

Like Kristin Scott Thomas, I am also fond of the Rostand. I went there for a coffee on my first day (a sopping rainy one) in Paris as an exchange student in fall of 1987. Thought happy thoughts about Edmond Rostand, author of Cyrano de Bergerac! It is a perfect spot to rest (or dry off) after a good walk in the Luxembourg Gardens or around the Latin Quarter.
