In the news

Yes, the French are as ecstatic as we are about our new president! But along with the articles that cover the entire front page of Le Monde, not to mention the 12-page supplement dedicated to the 44th president of the United States, they’ve managed to squeeze in a little food coverage. It is Wednesday, after all.

In this week’s Le Figaroscope is a round-up of the capital’s best organic restaurants — among those mentioned, I’ve always wanted to try Rose Bakery. Le Fig says: “Everything is good! The menu is a product of the daily market, yet with regular items like the quiches or savory tarts accompanied by salad, organic smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, impeccable rice pudding service warm, the crumbles…” (Rose Bakery, 46 rue des Martyrs, 9ème, tel: 01 42 82 12 80)

Le Fig also offers a short piece on organic wine and the differences between vins “bio“, vins “biodynamiques” and vins “nature” or “naturels.” (It’s very complex — though all feature organic raisins, they seem to differ in the ways the wines are processed.) They suggest four wine shops, which all purvey organic wine: Lavinia (3 bd de la Madeleine, 1ème, tel: 01 42 97 20 20), Caves du Panthéon (174 rue Saint-Jacques, 5ème, tel: 01 46 33 90 35). Le Verre Volé (38 rue Oberkampf, 11ème, tel: 01 43 14 99 46), Le Vin en Tête (30 rue des Batignolles, 17ème, tel: 01 44 69 04 57)

Finally of interest in Le Fig, is a sidebar on the Salon Marjolaine, the world’s largest organic exposition, which celebrates its 33rd anniversary this year. All things bio will be present, including food, wine and spirits, the environment, well-being, green tourism, artisanal products, housewares, and more! From November 8-16, 10.30am to 7pm, Parc Floral de Paris, 12ème, entry 8€, children under 12 free.

Meanwhile, after Le Monde’s 10 pages of election coverage is an article about wine cellars, “Des caves à tous les prix,” which focuses the science of wine preservation and ideal conditions of the perfect cave. It also discusses the best way to store your wine.

P.S. I snapped this photo a few weeks ago; it’s the window display of a Left Bank bookstore.
