Gourmet addresses

Here’s an interesting article from today’s Le Figaroscope (which, admittedly, is the only French journalism I read). It’s called Notre sélection d’adresses gourmandes and it lists the top five boulangeries, poissonneries, boucheries, fromagers and charcuteries in the city.

Not too many surprises here (Barthelemy and Quatrehomme for cheese, Pierre Hermé, Dalloyau, and Ladurée for pastries, Poissonnerie du Dôme for fish, etc.) — though — shocker for Parisians — a man with the decidedly non-French name of Anis Bouabsa (photo above) won best Parisan baguette of 2008! And he’s only 29, folks! While I’m sure some of the more, ahem, traditional, might raise an eyebrow at this news, perhaps they don’t know that Bouabsa supplies the bread for the Palais de l’Elysée — that is to say: Carla Bruni Sarkozy nibbles on his baguette! Actually maybe Bouabsa’s win is not so shocking — apparently he was declared “best worker in France” in 2004 (side note — meilleur ouvrier de France 2004 — this a joke, right?).

I was also pleased to see Gérard Mulot included on the pâtissier list, as a friend just introduced me to the shop. Their chocolate desserts are mwah-derful and, an added bonus, they are open on Sunday. (Photos via Le Figaroscope)
