Mere coincidence?

Did you watch Top Chef last night? I was struck by the Quickfire Challenge, which required contestants to prepare a dish out of five ingredients or less (with only salt, pepper and oil uncounted), a challenge that seemed suspiciously like… our very own Five Items! Could Top Chef producers be reading this blog?!

Being a firm believer in the philosophy of less-is-more, I was fascinated by this challenge, which as I well know, is not easy. Contestant Mark won with his sirloin steak, mushrooms, pureed turnip, peach sauce and butter, a plate that seems surprisingly complex for so few items. But I also thought Ryan’s sirloin steak, lettuce, radishes, potatoes and Dijon mustard looked elegant, fresh and well-composed. Pictured above is Stephanie’s grilled NY strip with turnips and apples. Actually, it surprised me how many contestants chose meat as most of my Five Items dishes are vegetarian and/or pasta-based. But I guess that’s why they’re Top Chefs and I’m not.
