Wednesday, January 16th, 2008I like fish and would like to cook and eat more of it. But I’m often stopped by my own pickiness — I can’t stand fishy fish, and must have it fresh, fresh, Fresh! Enter the Whole Foods fish counter, where I picked up a lovely piece of line-caught king salmon (and paid a whopping […]
Five items: Pasta carbonara
Tuesday, January 15th, 2008
In no way is this a classic carbonara — in fact, this recipe is adapted from a low-fat cookbook — but if you’re looking for a simple, savory meal (and you’re tired of tomato sauce) this is the pasta for you. I can whip this up in 20 minutes or less.
Peanut butter me up
Monday, January 14th, 2008
Peanut butter and chocolate are a classic combination, but one not often found in cake. So, I was greatly intrigued by the Barefoot Contessa at Home’s chocolate cupcakes and peanut butter icing. I made them yesterday for a friend’s party, and they were devoured to the last crumb. People actually sought me out to compliment the cupcakes!
Working class cats
Friday, January 11th, 2008Even before the New York Times published an article about New York City’s bodega cats, I have been in love with them. Lucia and I once saved a deli cat on Hudson Street from choking on sausage casing (by “saved” I mean that we chanted “Save the cat! Save the cat!” until a passerby actually stopped to […]
Please, try this at home
Thursday, January 10th, 2008I don’t usually post recipes because I do not want to encounter any Missy Chase Lapine-esque accusations of Seinfeld-style plagiarism. That being said, sometimes a recipe is already on the internets; if so, I try to link to it.
BUT — if you’d ever like to try any of the recipes seen here, leave me a […]
Soup’s on (and on, and on…)
Wednesday, January 9th, 2008
I made ribollita on Sunday, with a recipe from Lidia’s Italian-American Kitchen. It’s hearty, filled with winter vegetables — kale, swiss chard, cabbage, potatoes — and fortified with white beans and bread… and I’ve been eating it every day since I made it. (Why, yes! I am having another single week — how did you guess?) Here’s […]
Cooking scales of justice?
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008
Deceptive, sneaky; tomato, to-mah-to? According to an AP article, things are coming to a head between Jessica Seinfeld (she of Deceptively Delicious) and Missy Chase Lapine (she of The Sneaky Chef), with a law suit. Lapine claims that Jessica Seinfeld plagiarized her ideas, and that Seinfeld’s husband, Jerry, slandered her on the “Late Show with David […]
Can’t stop cooking with the Contessa
Monday, January 7th, 2008I thought I could stop after only two recipes but, as it turns out, now that I’ve started cooking from Barefoot Contessa at Home: Everyday recipes you’ll make over and over again I can’t quit. Garten’s recipes are just so appealing (the beautiful photos don’t hurt either), not to mention easy. I shook off my Secret […]
Dining out and about (Orange County): California eating
Friday, January 4th, 2008
As promised, here is our first installment of Dining Out and About, Destination: Orange County, California. Home to surf, sand, Republicans, one of the country’s most diverse populations, and also, well, me, Orange County is an ethnic cuisine lover’s paradise. To explore the bounty, 1. You must have a car; 2. You must be willing to […]
Coming soon: Dining out and about
Thursday, January 3rd, 2008
Tomorrow, we will introduce a new blog feature, Dining Out and About. Regular Cooking the Books readers have probably surmised that we love good food. We also love to travel. In fact, strolling a new city in search of a delicious meal is one of our favorite activities — we plan vacations around eating (Italy: yes; […]
