Winter mix

By Ann | January 17, 2008

The California girl in me can’t help but marvel at the snow today. The picture above was taken from my office/dining room window. Isn’t it pretty?

No cooking updates today as we had dinner at Mourayo last night, an fresh-faced gem of a Greek restaurant in Dupont Circle with reasonable prices and carefully prepared food. I’ve eaten here several times, but highlights include the symposium edesmata, a plate of delicious dips like tzatziki, skordalia and taramosalata, which you can scoop up with their chewy, freshly grilled pita bread. I also love the tender grilled octopus, with its crunchy, charred tips and accompanying silky fava bean puree (1732 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20009; 202-667-2100).

As this is restaurant week in Washington, I had a set menu for about $30 that involved an appetizer (butternut squash patties, not too sweet with a spicy kick), a main course (cubes of filet mingon in a tangy sauce wrapped in phyllo [sp?] dough) and a dessert (walnut cake). All delicious. But in addition to the food, Mouraya has a wonderfully warm atmosphere — and the people at the table behind us were speaking Greek!
