Working class cats
By Ann | January 11, 2008

Even before the New York Times published an article about New York City’s bodega cats, I have been in love with them. Lucia and I once saved a deli cat on Hudson Street from choking on sausage casing (by “saved” I mean that we chanted “Save the cat! Save the cat!” until a passerby actually stopped to assist the distressed feline). Now, thanks to the NY Times article, I have discovered a whole website devoted to working class cats! (Photo above from said website.) Can you imagine living in a bookstore?

The greatest cat we ever had was a stray we found huddled under a car in a rainstorm and who turned out to have been fed by a local deli for a year or more before finding us. He was ratty and beat-up, and so incredibly grateful that we took him in; he was basically glued to me whenever I was home for five years…New York City street cats and deli cats are the best.
