(Too) Sweet treats
By Ann | December 31, 2007

Nothing says festive quite like gingerbread, so I was happy to whip up the Barefoot Contessa at Home’s ultimate ginger cookie on Christmas day. Given Ina’s deep love of saturated fat, I was surprised to find that this recipe called for zero butter, but vegetable oil and only one egg.
Tasters loved the texture of these cookies — chewy on the outside, moist on the inside; chopped crystallized ginger gave the cookies a sophisticated, spicy bite. My only quibble is that the cookies were too sweet — the recipe calls for 1 cup of dark brown sugar and 1/3 cup of molasses, sugared ginger, and then each cookie is dipped in granulated sugar before baking. This last step probably creates the cookies’ crackly surface, but I’m wondering if I could skip it.
Finally, as we exit 2007, regular CtB readers may be wondering — how did the cook (me) finish with the books (Barefoot Contessa at Home, Moro, and Recipes from Provence) in the cooking dash of 2007? The answer is: not so well. Here’s a little tally:
Barefoot Contessa at Home: 2 of 2 recipes cooked
Recipes from Provence: 1 of 2
Moro: 0 of 2
Alas for the crisp, unstained pages of the Moro cookbook! So, I ask you, readers — should I draw a line under 2007 and start fresh in the new year with new cookbooks? Or, should I give Moro a full opportunity to shine (or fail) in the kitchen? Post a comment below or send me an e-mail and let me know what you’d like to see!

Why not draw a line under the Lunar New Year instead — you can start something new in the Year of the Rat, and give Moro a shot during the last days of the Year of the Pig! After all, I’m betting that the sun’ll come out to Moro.
