Progress: 0
By Ann | December 17, 2007
After my impassioned vow to use those three virgin cookbooks, guess how many recipes I made this weekend? None.
But I did have a great time up in New York. Highlights included panino, white bean soup, and salad at ‘ino (I’m addicted to their roasted garlic salad dressing), seeing Hannah and Her Sisters at Film Forum, a festive Chinatown dinner with friends and family at Joe’s Shanghai (but not their xiao long bao, which were a doughy disappointment compared to Din Tai Fung) and, most of all, my friend’s Brooklyn Heights holiday party. I made this crab dip, which was delicious despite the use of canned crab claw meat, and collaborated on some Swedish meatballs (Who knew Heinz chili sauce was the secret ingredient to Scando flavor?). Amanda’s pesto-goat-cheese dip was perfect spread on pita crackers, and I loved Lucia’s cheese toasts, salty, crisp, golden cheesy bites. I’m still sad we left before the stuffed mushrooms appeared.

Film Forum was a great culinary as well as cinematic experience. The concessions stand is a den of delight, from the fresh popcorn (salt it yourself!) to the big sweet cookies. And if you’re sleepy after a lunch at ‘ino and miles of walking around Manhattan, the espresso is superb.
I would also like to recommend Temple Bar on Lafayette for drinks. The peaceful, dim atmosphere is just right for chatting. And the martinis the size of birdbaths ain’t bad either.
