Ready steady cook!
By Ann | December 14, 2007
I’ve been feeling a little guilty about those three neglected cookbooks of 2007. I bought them with such high hopes and dreams of delicious meals. With their help, I was going to become a carefree Barefoot Contessa, living in a Provencal farmhouse with the scent of Moorish spices filling the air. Or, er, something like that. Yet, these poor books remain in my bookcase in pristine condition, their spines uncracked, their pages unmussed. (Don’t you think stained and loose pages are the sign of a good cookbook?)
To assuage my guilt, I’ve decided to cook two recipes from each book before the end of the year, in a sort of mini Cooking the Books review. That way, I can clean the slate and start fresh with new books in 2008. But with only two weeks left in the year, it’s going to be a bit of a mad dash. Are you prepared? On your marks, ready steady cook!
P.S. Does anyone else love this UK cooking game show with Ainsley Harriot?

Hi Ann,
Haha, I used to be addicted to Ready, Steady, Cook when I was an undergrad away from home and cooking to feed myself for the first time.
The show’s approach of creatively putting together something from what’s on hand has been a lasting influence on the way I cook, I think; whereas I find it very hard to follow recipes properly :P.
Good luck with the Cookbook Mad Dash!

Hi,
I agree. One can recognize a good cook book by the number of loose pages, chocolate and olive oil stains, and even the furtive scribbles made on it with secret add-on ingredients!
Can’t wait to hear about all your cooking frenzy!
