Just in time for the gift-giving season, here a few cookbooks that I find intriguing…

Patricia Wells at Home in Provence by Patricia Wells
I used this cookbook in Provence and loved its clear instructions and casual demeanor. Her soupe au pistou stands out in my memory as one of the best soups I’ve ever made (though this could also be due to the wonderful local produce I used). I still want to try her lighter version of daube.

Fish Forever by Paul Johnson
Another NYT notable. I haven’t looked through this but I love its subtitle “the definitive guide to understanding, selecting, and preparing healthy, delicious and environmentally sustainable seafood.” Phew! I’d have to page through this to see how it compares with Mark Bittman’s Fish: The Complete Guide to Buying and Cooking (which I don’t own, but know is very good).

Madhur Jaffrey’s Quick and Easy Indian Cooking by Madhur Jaffrey
This book by renowned author Jaffrey sounds perfect for weeknight suppers, but Indian cuisine is notoriously complex — can it really be quick and easy? This is definitely worth investigating at the bookshop.

The Tenth Muse by Judith Jones
Not technically a cookbook, but a memoir by legendary Knopf editor Judith Jones. She’s worked with Julia Child, Marcella Hazan, Madhur Jaffrey, Claudia Roden and other cookbook stars, as well as many literary giants. As a former publishing lackey and food lover, I find this book particularly appealing.

The Art of Simple Food by Alice Waters
Do I or don’t I? This book has received so many mixed reviews, it’s hard to know what to think. But I suspect this is a book for the ages, a perfect companion for the farmer’s market and all the seasonal, local products that are so faddish right now. I bet Waters offers some wonderful, inspiring flavor combinations and, in the end, isn’t that why we read cookbooks?
