The Deceptively Delicious program calls for cooks to create a store of fruit and vegetable purees, portioning them out so that they’re always on hand when you want to use them in a recipe. As author Seinfeld writes: “I encourage you to spend about an hour each week preparing the purees so that you’ll always have them […]
Secret single foods
Thursday, November 29th, 2007With Chris away for almost two weeks, last night seemed like a good opportunity to roast, steam and puree vegetables in an effort to create my own stock of Deceptively Delicious Seinfeld purees (so that they’re on hand whenever you want to whip up, say, a broccoli-and-carrot-enhanced gingerbread spice cake). But something got in the […]
Five items: Peas Encore
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007
I realize that this post on peas (my third) may indicate an unhealthy interest in them. But I’m not obsessed, I just like them (a lot!). And when living in Beijing, we never ate frozen peas — they were always old and hard (grands as opposed to petits, I suppose). Anyway, today’s post is about split […]
Ceci n’est pas un dip
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007How do I love cookbooks? Let me count the ways… One of my favorite things is the glossy photography, the luscious, shiny, melty, colorful images of food that look better than anything I’ll ever make. I’ve only bought one cookbook because of its photographs (The Nantucket Table — a mistake) but I do often cook recipes […]
Spinach and other deceptions
Monday, November 26th, 2007I’ve never been a picky eater. Even as a kid, I remember loving things like tomatoes and avocados, even broccoli. But I do believe in eating a variety of vegetables, and, as I mentioned in an earlier post, trying to limit the saturated fat and salt in my diet. Which is why Jessica Seinfeld’s Deceptively […]
A concerned reader responds…
Wednesday, November 21st, 2007After reading our post “Cooking with butter. Lots of it” a concerned reader wrote us the following e-mail:
“Be sure to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and not too much
deep fried stuff, butter or cheese. Every mouthful counts. Be sure
you exercise every day if possible.”
A tribute to peas
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007Apparently, the French find peas irresistible, as well!
Introducing: Five items
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007Welcome to a new feature on this blog, in which I attempt to create a meal out of five ingredients or less.
Today’s challenge involves one of my favorite freezer staples: frozen peas. I love, love, love peas — not necessarily to eat, but rather the word, pea. Or, in French, petits pois. It’s just so darn […]
Bogged down in sugar
Monday, November 19th, 2007I love cranberries. They seem so festive and distinctly American (though they’re not). When I read about the cranberry tart with polenta crust in the NYT’s dining section last Wednesday, I knew I had to make one, too — it sounded so unique and seasonal, bright and tart (ahh! inadvertent pun).
Pineapple pie
Friday, November 16th, 2007What do you give to an 87-year-old man who has everything? While planning a trip to visit Chris’s grandparents in State College, I cooked up the idea (ha ha) of baking them a pie. Chris’s father reminded me that Grampy likes, nay, loves, nay, ADORES pineapple pie… and thus another culinary investigation was launched.
